BOXING: Past meets present when Jane Couch and Blackeye Promotions bring professional boxing to Bristol's city centre Marriott Hotel tomorrow night.

Inside the ring, the focus will be on home-town favourite Martin Robins and his bid to extend a perfect four-fight record against Birmingham's Matt Seawright in the main event.

But before the first bell sounds, all eyes will be on the heroes of yesteryear.

Event organiser Couch has invited some of Bristol boxing's best-known names from the recent past, among them former WBC super middleweight champion Glenn Catley and one-time British light-welter boss Ross Hale.

They will be joined at ringside by erstwhile stable-mates Sean Baker and Paul Moylett, two popular fighters who helped Chris Sanigar's Bristol Boys gym re-establish the sport in the West Country in the previous decade.

"It's great that so many of the old names can turn out to support the next generation," declared Couch, who presents four bouts under the Blackeye banner.

"These guys helped put boxing back on the map in Bristol during the 1990s and they're still well known and remembered by everyone who loves the sport in our region.

"The likes of Glenn and Ross have helped inspire a new generation of fighters and I'm sure lads like Martin Robins, who are just starting out, look up to them.

"I thought it would be nice to invite the former boxers and I was really pleased when they said they could come. It will feel just like old times."

Former Downend ABC middleweight Robins will be hoping to turn in an impressive performance against the more-experienced Seawright, while Bristol Boys light middleweight Rocky Chakir provides the other local interest in a four-round contest against Birmingham journeyman Tony Randall.

Trowbridge prospect Nick Blackwell meets Chris Brophy over six two-minute rounds and new Tex Woodward signing, Ben Wakeham, makes his Bristol debut against Craig Dyer in a welterweight tussle.

Tickets (boxing, no dinner) are still available, priced £20, and can be booked by calling 07540 364766.
