A man wearing no shoes chased a suspected burglar for half a mile before catching him and making a citizen's arrest.

Plumber Daniel Tripp made a similar citizen's arrest last March.

The 20-year-old won a Post Gold Star award last year for running after a burglar when a woman shouted that he had broken into her Redfield home.

His latest heroic chase happened in Hanham.

Having just been made redundant, Mr Tripp was at his girlfriend's house fixing some shelves in her spare bedroom when he noticed a man in the lane behind the house.

The suspicious-looking man was wheeling a bike and balancing two electric drill boxes on the handle bars.

Mr Tripp immediately dropped his tools, grabbed his mobile phone and ran out the house without having time to put on any shoes.

Once in a lane behind Lower Hanham Road, he noticed a garage had been broken into and he started running after the burglar.

At the end of the lane he asked a passing woman if she had seen the man and was pointed in the direction of Tabernacle Road.

He next caught sight of the man in Maypole Square as he disappeared down Memorial Road, going away from Hanham High Street.

Mr Tripp continued running and saw the man disappear into a nearby industrial estate.

Once there, he lost sight of the man for more than 10 minutes and almost gave up the chase, before he spotted him again slightly further down the street, chatting to another man .

"He looked like he was trying to sell the drills to this guy.

"I ran over and immediately told him I was performing a citizen's arrest.

"As I was doing that, I rang the police on my mobile. They turned up within five minutes and took him away in handcuffs."

Mr Tripp, who refused to accept he was a hero, added: "I just thought he looked suspicious so gave chase, that's all."

Police confirmed that a 38-year-old man had been arrested and bailed to return to Staple Hill police station next month.

Almost a year ago to the day, Mr Tripp, who lives in Speedwell, chased a man after he saw him struggling with a woman in Morse Street, Redfield.

Mr Tripp, who keeps fit by playing football at the weekend, dialled 999 as he ran and police swooped on the suspect after he jumped over a garden wall in Easton Road, Easton.

Our Gold Star awards recognise and celebrate the actions of local heroes.

Steve Game, an Avon and Somerset police spokesman, said: "It's great that members of the public are prepared to help the police in this way. While we are always grateful for any assistance, we would urge people to be aware of their own safety before they give chase."

“Well done for his actions. He looks quite a big lad though. Its only brave taking on potential criminals if they are the same size or bigger- otherwise its just throwing your weight around!”

“Well done Daniel, you are right lets stick together as a community care for each other and work together. Do not worry about spelling and grammer it is irrelevant in this situation.

Just be careful and look after your self as now certain people may want to take a 'pop' keep your eyes open!

I wish everyone was as caring as you it appears most prefer to be sarcastic name calling commentators basing their opinions on thin air!”

“graham i understand where you are coming from, but i acted the way i did for many reasons, for one the garage is in a lane where there is one way in one way out and at the time there were no one else in the lane at the time. 2 the man was leaving the garage he was about 1meter away and was trying to get away fast. 3the garage is set back into the garden, if you want to be picky another reasons then was trespassing" 4 there are no reason for this person to be in the lane. 5 the lady the who pointed me in his direction said "i thought he looked surspecous in the way he was rushing away in a hurry" so you must think all this has happened in a matter of one - two minuts, from me putting a shelf up, to me being up the top of this lane. what do i do? i felt there WAS need to chase him. but hey i could of give up and let it become another satisticed but i didnt. i dont recommend any one else do what i did because it highly dangours, but thats my way thats what i chose to do. i just lost my job and finding it hard with no income coming in. if my tools and drill were stolen i would not have the money to replace them and that would be not a good point at an interview when i explain i have no tools. do you see my point? (with the tools bit) for the citezen arrest i did not lay a hand on him a grabbed his jumper and there was witnesses there. so i would like to hear what you would of done graham in my shoes, if it was your neighbour garage. with that little bit more info that the paper didnt put in. thank you to the rest of the people for your nice comments. lets stick togeter as a community and not let them have a easy ride sorry about the spelling and grammer”

“(Get someone humming the tune of Stan, Eminem)

    Dear Dan,

Your story reminded me of something that happened to me the other day.

I wanted to fit a new lock on my garage so I borrowed some tools off a mate,a couple of drills to fit the new lock.

I soon realised after taking the old lock off I had the wrong tools for the job. I didn't want to leave my bike in the garage, its unsecure see. So I took out my bike and the borrowed drills to meet up with my mate so I could borrow different tools from him. He works in an industrial estate see.

All of a sudden some bloke jumped on me, he had no shoes on and... it was you! Damn!”

“Whilst I would tend to commend this young mans actions, I think, given the circumstances he is skating on very thin ice.
In order to perform a citizens arrest you must "know" that an offence has been committed AND you must "know" that that person had committed it.
Your story suggest that it was a mere "suspicion" and the only people allowed to arrest on any suspicion in relation to this type of thing is a Police Constable.
This young person is leaving himself open to charges of assault and I am surprised that the police spokesperson did not mention this !”
