A FIVE-year-old boy who phoned the emergency services after his mother became trapped in a bedroom has been reunited with the operator who took the call.

The Post reported last month how Jacob Rees had been instructed to dial 999 by his mother Rachel Clarke, who was having a panic attack after becoming trapped in the room in their Southmead home. The youngster calmly followed her instructions, while also looking after his two-year-old brother, James.

Call handler Lena Gould answered the emergency call and sent police to Lowther Road to free Rachel.

She said she was blown away by Jacob's sensible approach.

"We get a lot of calls from land lines from children and most of the time they are accidental but this one, you could tell straight away, was an emergency," she said. "I can't believe how great he was. He is only five but managed to follow instructions while remaining calm."

Rachel said her eldest son had done all the right things to ensure she was released safely and his little brother was cared for.

She said: "He did really well and I'm proud of him.

"It was a real relief when police came and freed me, and I could see that nothing bad had happened to my children in the meantime."

Rachel had become locked in her bedroom when daughter Lauren, seven, who was playing hide-and- seek, rushed in and shut the door tight. But its handle had broken the day before and been taken off, leaving Rachel unable to open it.

With no mobile phone and no way of escaping Rachel panicked, knowing that Jacob and James were on their own on the other side.

But she managed to slide a note to Jacob under the door and, despite never using a phone before, he managed to dial 999.

Police arrived and knocked the door down to find a crying Rachel nearly an hour after her daughter's game had gone horribly wrong.

“His sister's looking kinda coy in the pic.
    So:

    1. Why wasnt the door handle "fixed" as soon as it came off!

    2. Dont they have windows in bedrooms in Southmead any more!

This could have ended in tragedy!”
