Herlings enjoys his Weston victory to round off season
WORLD 250cc motocross champion Jeffrey Herlings rounded off a highly successful year by winning the 30th Annual Beach Race at Weston-super-Mare on Sunday.
The 18-year-old Netherlands KTM rider was always in the leading bunch in the three-hour marathon, but it was in the last hour that he drew away from his closest rivals Scot Shaun Simpson, whose father Willie won one of the first events in the '80s, and Belgian Ken De Dycher.

Action from the Weston Beach Race
It was an unlucky day for local idol Tom Church, who fell on the opening the lap and lost several places. However, he was back up to 14th on completion of the second lap, but shortly after he went out with engine failure.
Herlings, who is coached by ten-time world motocross champion Stefan Everts, said that he had enjoyed the event and would probably be back next year.

Jason Hamblin won the BSSA's hour-long timed and observation trial at Hanham Mills, inside the city boundary the same day, by nine marks from Whitchurch all rounder Paul Mannings, and Justin Adams a close third.
Manning was a shade better in the half-dozen observed sections than Hamblin, but he incurred ten more time penalties. All three lost most of their marks in the first and last sections. Of those who managed to complete eight laps, Enduro class winner Tom Smith was first to be flagged off.
Gary Marshman improved his chances of obtaining a Wessex Centre Trials Championship win by winning the West Wilts club's Errington Cup event at Langridge, near Bath.
Over three laps of a dozen sections at Upper Court Farm, he lost 27 marks fewer than runner-up Ben Skinner. He lost his only maximum mark penalty in a climb over mud and tree roots in the 11th section, the remainder of his total were single mark debits.
The over-40 years class was a three-way contest between Hedley Ashford, Mark Talbot and Tim Wheeler, during which the lead changed hands on several occasions until Ashford went ahead on the final lap.
The over-50 class result was also resolved on the final lap in favour of David Fry at the expense of David Clothier.
