Help needed for homeless people
ONE of the most worrying aspects of the recession we're going through is the rise in homelessness around the country. Bristol has had a 10% cut in its council budget but independently of this the coalition government has also abolished the Social Fund, which helps with homeless crisis and prevention. A full one-fifth of people who have accessed this fund have experienced homelessness. It is a vital way to keep people off the streets and protects the most vulnerable from the coldest weather at this time of year.
It is in this context that we must view Councillor Barbara Janke's criticism of the Green Party's amendment to the mayor's budget. I know Cllr Janke is aware of the pressures that local authorities are under, but I didn't see any Liberal Democrat amendments aimed at ensuring crisis provision, neither did I hear her mention it as the reason for our amendment in her letter. We must ensure homeless provision, even if it does mean a slight drop in some leisure provision.
Greens are committed to supporting the most vulnerable in Bristol and the amendment is crucial in doing this. What alternative would Cllr Janke suggest to provide for lower income families struggling to make ends meet?
