Help birds survive the snow
Gardeners are being urged to help birds survive the snowy weather by spending a few minutes putting out extra food and water and keeping bird tables clear of snow.
The RSPB said snowfalls which have hit parts of the country mean birds cannot get reach worms and insects in the ground, while berries on shrubs and other natural food sources are covered in snow.
The wildlife charity said garden birds were eating more seeds put out by gardeners because they needed to keep their energy intake high in the freezing weather.
Food on bird tables and in feeders was a real lifeline in the current conditions, the RSPB said.
Richard James, wildlife adviser for the RSPB, said: "Lots of us can't get to work today, so if you are at home, spending a few minutes clearing up bird tables or putting out food could mean the difference between life and death for some of our garden birds."
