Helen Holland new Bristol Labour group leader

BRISTOL'S Labour group has chosen Helen Holland to be its new leader.

A private party meeting was held at City Hall tonight, where members voted between former council leader Ms Holland, and Derek Pickup.

Ms Holland, who represents Whitchurch Park on the city council, tweeted: "Many thanks to Labour colleagues for putting their trust in me. I am delighted by tonight's result, and relish the challenges ahead."

Former leader Peter Hammond resigned in November after an internal party row over whether Labour councillors should serve on mayor George Ferguson's cabinet.
