Health bosses rule land sale to fund Cossham Hospital upgrade

Health bosses have ruled out a lland sale to fund Cossham Hospital upgrade
During consultation on plans for the scheme it was suggested that part of the site may have to be sold to help fund the work.
But NHS South Gloucestershire, which will run the community hospital, has now said that they will not be selling any of the land.
Alan Chambers, 82, of Cottrell Road, Kingswood, had been asking for answers from the local health trust since it was stated that land would be sold in consultation documents handed out at a meeting at the end of 2006.
The retired builder was among the campaigners who fought for Cossham to be retained and refurbished and said he was pleased it would be given a new lease of life as a community hospital. However, he was disappointed that no one from the health trust has responded to his requests for information.
Mr Chambers has been gathering information on the hospital for more than two years and has documents from the consultation meetings in October 2006 when the wording was changed from "land could be sold" to "land will be sold".
He said: "I put forward questions relating to the land, how much they were going to sell and how much money they were going to get, but they would not or could not answer my questions.
"When it was announced last year that £19m was made available for the refurbishment, I asked if it meant they would no longer be selling land and was told they had not made up their minds.
"I had hoped they would not sell the land but it was on the table all the time and I still want to hear it for myself."
The health trust will be showing residents plans for the refurbishment at a drop-in meeting on the Cossham site on Tuesday.
NHS South Gloucestershire spokeswoman Fiona Reid said: "There is not going to be any land sold. We have not been at a point before where we could say that we would not sell land. It has taken this long because we have been planning what to do with the site.
"The idea of the open day is for people to come along and have a look at the plans we are going to submit to Bristol City Council and ask questions."
Cossham Hospital currently provides limited diagnostic and outpatient services, but once the redevelopment has been completed it will deliver a new range of state-of-the-art healthcare, including an extension to create a renal dialysis unit.
Repairs will be made to the tower gatehouse and frontage of the listed building and a single storey extension is planned at the back of the building for scanners.
An extension will also be added to the stable block to create a renal dialysis unit.
Tuesday's drop-in session runs at the Recreation Hall at Cossham Hospital from 2.30pm until 8pm.

“If there is any spare land at cossham, and I cant think where this is but it would be sensible to use this for car parking.”
