Newly-crowned British super flyweight champion Lee Haskins believes he has earned the right to defend his title in his native city.

And the 24-year-old Lockleaze boxer, who dethroned Doncaster's Andy Bell to claim the Lonsdale Belt in Wigan on Friday night, is urging manager Chris Sanigar to land him a high-profile fight in Bristol next year.

Forced to travel the length and breadth of the country to box in recent years, Haskins is now in a position to call the tune after climbing to the top of the domestic pile and regaining championship status.

Back at home with wife Claire and children Anton and Nadine, the former Commonwealth 8st boss is desperate to reward his loyal supporters by topping the bill on a Sky-televised show in his own backyard.

"It's about time we had a big show and a major title fight in Bristol," declared Haskins, who has fought in Bristol only once and travelled to London (twice), Yorkshire and Lancashire during the past two years.

"I've had enough of travelling and fighting away from home. I've done it the hard way and now want to do something here, in front of my own people.

"My friends and family are always asking me when I'm going to be boxing in Bristol and are always disappointed when I tell them I'm not. I would like to think that will change now I'm champion."

Bristol-based promoter and manager Sanigar is considering staging a show in conjunction with London's Frank Maloney at a venue in the city early next year and the Commonwealth and Empire Club at Temple Meads and Filton College have been touted as possible venues.

Victory over Bell promises to open a number of doors for Haskins.

Spaniard Ivan Pozo meets Frenchman Christophe Rodrigues to contest the vacant 8st crown in Spain next month and Sanigar is hoping the EBU will allow Haskins to fight the winner.

He explained: "Lee is ranked number three by the EBU in the bantamweight division and we'll now be lobbying to get him ranked as a flyweight. After beating Bell, he should be very near to the top of the rankings."

Sanigar admitted: "It would be nice to make a voluntary defence in the new year and put it on in Bristol.

"We're happy to work with Frank Maloney because he has a deal with Sky TV. We'll talk with Frank and discuss all the possible options before making a decision."
