Hartpury go for third consecutive Twickenham final
Hartpury College will have extra motivation to reach Twickenham when they welcome London One Portsmouth in the EDF Energy Intermediate Cup semi-final tomorrow.
If lifting silverware for the third consecutive season at the home of rugby was not enough for Alan Lewis' men the fact their names could be the last ever etched on the trophy will certainly help.
The RFU's decision to re-structure the leagues next season and make National One a fully professional division has meant the end of competitions like the Intermediate Cup.
"It is quite sad that they are getting rid of it. I was reading something the other day saying there was not much interest in it," Senior Rugby Manager Lewis said.
"From a playing point of view what I like is that every club in England has a chance to get to play at Twickenham but the powers that be have decided against it.
"I think the fact that the competition is coming to an end means it would be nice to win the competition for the last time."
The College has a good record in league and national cup competitions since they entered the leagues for the first time in 2004/05.
They have secured four straight promotions and look set for a fifth from Tribute Western Counties North after opening up a nine-point lead with four matches remaining.
They have won the EDF Junior Vase and Senior Vase in the last two years as well as the BUSA title.
But after chalking up a record of 27 unbeaten national cup ties, will they be able to go one better again?
"It is important for the players because a win would take them to Twickenham. It is important to get to any final," Lewis added. "We have won two Vases in the last two years and it is a good day out."
