Hargreaves is right about council
I REALLY enjoyed the article by your Business Editor Michael Ribbeck on Hargreaves and Lansdown, the Bristol financial services firm which was founded 30 years ago by Peter Hargreaves and Steve Lansdown.
The success of this company from humble beginnings at Clifton to the giant it is today in the financial world is astounding to put it mildly, also listed on the FTSE 100 elite.
To increase their revenue by 24 per cent in the last six months is simply amazing, also taking on another 60-70 staff in these difficult times speaks for itself the way this company is being run. I am certain there is more growth here with this company because they employ people who know exactly what they are doing in their particular field.
I fully agree with Mr Hargreaves when he states that Bristol does not fully appreciate the wealth his company brings into the city in the shape of people employed and those companies that feed off their presence here in the city.

Finally I just love Mr Hargreaves opinion of Bristol City Council.
We should sack the whole bunch of them for all the good they do in Bristol, a waste of taxpayers' money.
I could not agree more. What we have on the council is a bunch of amateurs attempting to carry out a professional job.
And, believe me, Bristol council are not an isolated case. We have this rife among councils in the UK.

HOW right A C Killbe is in his letter.
The reference to Peter Hargreaves saying that none of the "three jolly boys" has any business acumen having come into politics straight from university.
I would take a step further and say that this has applied to all politicians in my living memory.
The politicians generally don't have the ability to succeed in business, that's why they go into politics.
They can't run a business but they believe that they can run a country. How arrogant and dangerous is that?
Well we all know the answer, a complete mess!!

“It is so easy to stand on the outside and take verbal potshots at those who have actually made an effort to serve their community as politicians, be it as Prime Minister or on the local parish council. And having had success as a businessman does not necessarily equip one to be successful as a politician.”

“Mr Hargreaves may be good at making a big pile of money for himself and his wealthy clients, but can he actually do anything useful? It is the financial services industry that has got this country in the mess it is in, not the road sweepers, dustbin men, social workers, librarians, trading standards officers, highway engineers, housing officers, home care assistants, child protection officers, teachers, dinner ladies, and many others who deliver essential services for a relative pittance. Mr Hargreaves could have stood for Mayor when the opportunity was there, but preferred to espouse his saloon bar philosophy safely from the sidelines. Perhaps he could turn his undoubted business genius to the problem of how we revive productive industry in Bristol, starting with coming up with a business plan for keeping Filton airfield open as a thriving centre for industry. He could afford to buy the site himself from his loose change. How about it Mr Hargreaves?”
