Hanham High School sports hall complete
A new £2.5 million sports hall has been completed at Hanham High School to provide a state-of-the-art facility for pupils and residents.
The complex will allow a range of sports to be played, from football and tennis to basketball. Cricket nets have also been provided.
Funding for the scheme was agreed in February 2007, when South Gloucestershire Council agreed Hanham and Chipping Sodbury School should both have better sports facilities.
John Goddard, chairman of governors at Hanham and a South Gloucestershire councillor, said: "We are absolutely delighted that work has finished on building this much-needed new facility.
"Hanham High is an excellent school but it has previously missed out by not being able to offer a modern sports hall, which is an important part of providing the quality of facilities students require. What is particularly exciting is the hall will be able to be used not just by the school but also the wider local community.
"There has been a lot of publicity about young people's health and this is an increasingly important issue, which needs to be addressed by ensuring that schools are provided with quality sports facilities."
Work on Chipping Sodbury's £3.7 million sports hall and all-weather pitch, which will also be available for residents to use, is still underway.
The council and the school are sharing the costs of the project, which also attracted a grant of £799,500 from the Football Foundation.
As well as the usual indoor sports, the hall has been designed to be used for Futsal, the increasingly popular Brazilian-style football game.
The "third generation" artificial pitch is said to be made of the closest material to grass and will be floodlit throughout the year.

“I think it's really out of order that you're saying we vandalise things. There are many perfectly normal kids at Hanham and you shouldn't judge a book by it's cover. When you see us after school it is nothing to do with the school. Mrs Farrington has completely changed the place. If you don't believe me on this have the courage to come into the school and find out for yourself.

“Like I said Ian a few not all teenagers are involved in this behaviour and who's to even say some of them don't even attend the school or have even left. This is also nothing to do with the behaviour in school which when I have been into the school on open days the children have always seemed very polite and well behaved Mrs Farrington runs a good school and this is why the school was also given outstanding performance in the ofsted report but this still doesn't have anything to do with the school sports hall which you don't even seem to congradulate the school on getting. All I can say to your anti social behaviour I know where my children are on evening and weekend's and are not involved in this anti social behaviour like I said don't tar all with the same brush.”

“Just a few may be of loutish behaviour don't tar all with the same brush Ian. Perhaps if we would finally be given something for the kids of Hanham i.e. Bike park we wouldn't have any loutish behaviour.
I have two children at the school and seeing the changes over the last few years to improvements the school is excellent upto other local ones well done to Hanham High on getting funding for this sports hall it was well needed.”

“Yes; something more for the attendees of this school to vandalise. Will go well with their loutish behaviour outside of school.”
