Hamblin edges out King by one mark
Motocross: Jason Hamblin scored a single-mark win over Peter King in a nailbiting finish to the BSSA's hour-long timed and observation trial at Hanham Mills on Sunday.
Hamblin and King, plus first-class award and enduro class winners Paul Manning, Jeremy Walters, Andy Scrivens and Lee Cornish, completed eight laps of a demanding course on the banks of the Avon.
King was first to finish, with Hamblin in his wheel tracks, but King had lost six marks on observation on a climb over tree roots in the final section, as opposed to Hamblin, who incurred a three-mark penalty on a muddy left-hand turn in the first.
Manning and Walters both lost six marks in the third section in a stone-and-rock-filled ditch that claimed marks from most of the 40 starters.
Ben Bramwell, from Crewkerne, gained a special test win over Lee Hassall in the Wilts Border club's trial at Stanton St Quinton, near Chippenham, the same day.
In four laps of 10 sections, Bramwell lost two marks in the none too difficult fourth section, as opposed to Hassall, who lost single marks in the third and last.
With dry conditions prevailing, Craig Talbot had no chance of combatting a five-mark penalty that he incurred in the third section when he rode the incorrect side of a section marker.
Non-expert class winner Tim Wheeler went home thinking that he had lost just two marks, without realising that he had made a similar mistake as Talbot in the third.
Great Britain finished fifth in the Motocross des Nations, the international team event in Italy on Sunday.
United States were winners for the fifth year, with France second and Belgium third.
