Hall touchdown gives breathing space to Reds
OLD Redcliffians eased their National Three South West relegation concerns with a tremendous 13-10 victory at Weston-super-Mare.
Joe Hall, at fly-half, secured the points with a late try, which he converted after earlier slotting two penalties. Weston had taken the lead with a penalty from Bristol's James Letherby, who then made a break which produced a try for winger Matt Watkins. Letherby also added the conversion.
But Reds dug in to take revenge for a home defeat by the Seasiders, and set themselves up for Saturday's visit by bottom side Newbury.
In South West One West, leaders Brixham suffered a setback at Camborne and gave hope to Clevedon and Avonmouth, who both closed the gap with battling away victories.
Clevedon made it seven wins from their last eight outings thanks to a 19-10 triumph in heavy conditions at Paignton. The visitors' pack took charge for long periods, No 8 Dave Rawle touching down twice in the first period from close range.
Mike Taylor added a conversion for a 12-5 lead at the break, and also added the extras when centre Dean Ashfield scored close. Paignton rallied with a second score, but Clevedon held on to remain second.
Avonmouth had to battle hard for their 17-14 victory at Sidmouth, who rallied in the closing stages. Tries from Gary Collier and Harry Hone, both converted by Andy Taylor, who was also on target with a penalty, opened up a 17-5 advantage.
Sidmouth chipped away at the deficit with three penalties, but Avonmouth held firm to complete the double over the Devon side.
Thornbury remain in relegation trouble after a last-gasp 21-18 reverse at Cullompton. The visitors led 12-0 and 18-11 but were unable to close out a much needed victory. Centre Tim Stephens and scrum-half Jak Evans crossed for tries, Stephens converting and adding two penalties.
The win took Cullompton above Cleve, who lost 17-14 to Oldfield.
