Swindon Town have been unable to break the deadlock at Prenton Park this afternoon – despite enjoying the better of the opening period.

Striker Simon Cox saw the best chance in a first-half of few opportunities, but his attempt to execute the simplest of tap-ins from close range was heroically blocked by Tranmere full-back Andy Taylor.

Strike partner Billy Paynter also had an early goal-bound effort blocked by defender Ben Chorley before firing another powerful low shot wide as a Town side, unchanged for the one that lost to Hartlepool in midweek, dominated proceedings.

Danny Wilson's side also mustered attempts at goal off the boots of Kevin Amankwaah and Hal Robson-Kanu and showed impressive defensive organisation.

Tranmere were frustrated in their meek attempts to break down a stubborn Swindon Town rearguard and were booed off by their own supporters at the half-time whistle. Weak efforts from striker Ian Moore and Anthony Kay, which were both easily held by Town goalkeeper Peter Brezovan, were the sum total of their meek attempts to press home home turf advantage.

Tranmere Rovers (4-4-2): Achterberg; Shotton, Goodison, Chorley, Taylor; Barnett, Jennings, Kay, Shuker; Savage, Moore. Subs not used: Coyne, Eds, Gornell, Sonko, Cresswell.

Swindon Town (4-4-2): Brezovan; J Smith, Greer, Ifil, Vincent; Amankwaah, Timlin, Kanyuka, Robson-Kanu; Cox, Paynter. Subs not used: P Smith, McNamee, Nalis, Lescinel, Peacock.
