David Clarkson has hammered in his third goal of the season to give Bristol Rovers a slender advantage at Burton Albion this afternoon.

Clarkson, who is again deployed in an unfamiliar midfield role, arrived on the edge of the penalty area on the half-hour mark to guide an accurate shot into the bottom corner of the Burton goal after Tom Eaves had nodded a Jim Paterson cross into his path.

It was the only effort Mark McGhee's side have managed to have on target during an opening period in which they have been mainly on the back-foot – despite being rarely troubled by the home side.

The closest they came was when a Zander Diamond header from an accurate set-piece delivery was directed just wide of the post, while Justin Richards also fired over the crossbar when presented with a good opportunity inside the penalty area a few minutes before the break.

A rare start for wideman Joe Anyinsah was the only change McGhee made to the side that secured a victory over Northampton last weekend in an attempt to secure what would be a second successive away victory.

Anyinsah came in on the right-hand side of midfield to compensate for the loss of striker Derek Riordan, who failed to recover from a hamstring complaint, in what his first start in three weeks. Eliot Richards moved up front to partner Tom Eaves.

Rovers: Etheridge; Lund, Kenneth, Parkes, Paterson; Anyinsah, Clarkson, Norburn, Broghammer; Richards, Eaves. Subs: Walker, L Brown, Harrison, W Brown, Virgo, Staley, Smith.

Burton Albion: Tomlinson, Diamond, Taylor, Richards, McCrory, Maghoma, O'Connor, Dyer, Bell, Kiernan, Kee. Subs: Atkins, Corbett, Webster, Stanton, Yussuf, Paterson, Rooney.
