Teams from Shirehampton, Hengrove, Whitchurch and two from Easton travelled

to City Academy School to take part in a series of Street20 games – a fast-paced

format made up innings of just 20 balls per team. The matches are played using

a tennis ball wrapped in industrial tape, mimicking the form of cricket seen in

places like India where locals play on the street.

Each team played eight games with Easton A beating Easton B to first

place. Hengrove finished third with Whitchurch and Shirehampton in fourth and

fifth place respectively.

All the players involved were aged 10-14 and have come through

Street Chance sessions run by the Gloucestershire Cricket Board at local

leisure and community centres. The aim of the project is to engage with hard to

reach young people and get youngsters playing the game that wouldn't usually

have the opportunity.

GCB development officer Chris Munden said: "The atmosphere was

fantastic and it was great to see young people from different communities and

get on so well.

"The teams with the older players tended to get the better of the

matches but some of the younger players showed amazing skill and with a bit

more power they could easily have won more games.

"Most of these players wouldn't have been playing the sport if it

wasn't for StreetChance and the future of the project looks very bright with

players like these coming through the scheme."

Such was the success of the festival that it is now set to become

a regular event.  For more information on

StreetChance including when and where sessions are held visit http://www.gloucestershirecricketboard.com/index.php/schools/streetchance

Any young person is welcome aged between 8 and 18. If you have any

questions please contact Chris Munden on 07557 924941 or email chris.munden@glosccc.co.uk
