This Guinness Premiership finale could not be better
There are some huge games in the Guinness Premiership this weekend – and none are bigger than Bath versus Harlequins.
Both sides are in the top four, both sides have 57 points, both sides had good wins on Wednesday night, and both sides will be full of confidence.
A victory today for either side would see them take a significant step toward securing a top-four finish with two games to play – and Bath are in for a tough game.
Harlequins, under Dean Richards, have a no-nonsense approach to the game. Their forwards do their basics well and are comfortable with the ball in their hands – and they have a dangerous set of backs, who appear to relish the type of game they play.
But, that being said, Bath are at home – and there are not too many sides who get the better of them at the Rec. I think they should have enough to win today, but I can see it being tight and Quins leaving with a bonus point. It is the sort of match I can imagine being won by a mistake or a moment of brilliance.
The way the end to the season is set up – especially at the top of the table – is exactly how the administrators, the supporters and the television viewers would have wanted.
With three matches to go, three teams are on 57 points, one is on 56, one on 55 and another on 51. It is so tight at the top and you could not have written a better scenario.
Gloucester are heavily involved in the play-off shake-up and go to Northampton today – which is a difficult game for them.
While Northampton have been fallible away from home this season, they have been very solid at Franklin's Gardens and will be a tough nut to crack for Gloucester.
It is getting very congested at the top, with Harlequins, Leicester, Bath, London Irish and Sale also competing for the play-off places – and this is not the time to let your foot off the accelerator.
Northampton is a nasty place to go, though, when you need to win – and Gloucester's injuries have not helped. They will miss Mike Tindall's solid defensive work and James Simpson-Daniel's cutting edge and this is a dodgy game for them; it really is in the balance.
At the other end of the table, Worcester appear to have lost the plot – but it might just have happened too late to save Bristol.
Bristol deserve a lot of credit, and at long last they are showing their supporters and sponsors what they can do. They have shown great fighting spirit, but, unfortunately for them, they face a London Irish team today who need to win to stay involved in the push for the top four.
If the season went on for another four or five games, they might have time to get out of trouble – but they are going to have to win at either London Irish or Leicester, or possibly even both, to stand any chance of staying up now.
