Groves cruises to victory after first-hour blank

Phil Groves managed to clinch a comfortable 88-12-0 victory despite making a slow start in the Carpenters Arms 2000 AC match, fished on Dabinett Lake at Cider Farm Lakes, Lympsham.

He poled slime paste to the bottom of the island shelf at 14.5 metres off peg 21 and went on to net 35 carp weighing in the 2-6lb bracket after suffering a first-hour blank.

Only 5oz separated second and third place. Chris Bland poled banded 8mm pellet at 13 metres to the central island for 14 carp weighing 35-3-0, while Graham Bennett used soft pellet at 14.5 metres off peg seven for 12 carp totalling 34-14-0.

● Alcove AC's webmaster Derrick Williams won the latest round of the Saturday Shield series with a 34-2-0 catch of carp.

Williams poled worm over a chopped worm feed which he cupped-in at seven metres along the lakeside margins of peg seven on Margaret's Lake and brought fish weighing in the 3-0-0 and 7-0-0 bracket to the scales.

Second was Martin Alexander, who fished the same tactics as the winner at peg three for 23-8-0 of carp to 6-0-0.

Third-placed Brian Cleevely fished a variety of baits up to seven metres, both central and lakeside at peg nine, and weighed-in 3-4-0 of bits and the best fish of the match – a superbly-conditioned 12-0-0 mirror carp.

Results: 1, Derrick Williams 34-2-0, peg7; 2, Martin Alexander 23-8-0, peg 3; 3, Brian Cleevely 15-4-0, peg 9; 4, Paul Gowing 13-8-0, peg 4. Best fish: Brian Cleevely 12-0-0 mirror carp.

● Saints veteran Tom Bailey put soft 6mm pellet to work into the far lakeside margins off Rushcombe 22 and ran in a 40-5-0 winner in the Kingswood Disabled and Over 55s AC match, fished at Bullock Farm.

The runner up was Dave Farnam, who tempted a comparable 30-4-0.

● Peg 13 came up lucky for Pete Philips in the Bathampton AA Disabled & Over 55s match, fished at Hunstrete's Main Lake.

He poled 8mm hair-rigged pellet at 11 metres centre and weighed-in 28-0-0 of skimmers.

Results: 1, Pete Philips 28-0-0, peg 13; 2, Chris Rolfe 25-10-0, peg 11; 3, John Wilde 17-4-0, peg 12; 4, Rich Coles 9-15-0, peg 38; 5, Mike Nicholls 9-12-0, peg 36.

● Nick Duckett hammered out a whopping 182-14-0 of carp and sailed home an easy winner in the Avon Angling Midweek Open, fished on Specimen and Match Lakes at Landsend Fisheries, Wedmore.

The Team Landsend member poled and fed 6mm pellet close to the island point at 16 metres off Match 11 for 36 carp weighing in the 6-11lb class.

The runner-up was Tony Rixon, who fished an 8mm pellet over a 6mm feed close to the island off peg 22 for 112-6-0.

Top of the Specimen Lake scoresheet was Avon Angling's Tony Wittcomb with 100-13-0 of mostly carp.

Only 1-0-0 separated first and second place in the silverfish category. Mike West caught 22-2-0 of skimmers, while Paul Atwood coaxed a similar 21-2-0 from Match 19

● Martin Rayet made it two wins in two days with a superb 86-4-0 victory in the Queens Head Monday Open, fished at Boyd Valley Lake, Bitton.

The Queens Head landlord poled both paste and meat tight, into the lakeside margins of peg three for carp to almost 7lb.

Close behind came Shaun Townsend, who fished the same tactics, both central and lakeside, at peg 11 for a similar 85-2-0.

● Bristol's Martin Rayet cruised to an easy 80-0-0 victory in the Kings Head "Elite" match, fished at Viaduct Fishery, Somerton.

The Preston Innovations Thatchers rod fished an 8mm hair-rigged pellet and used both a long pole and straight lead to tempt carp to 12-9-0.

Beaconsfield AC member Steve O'Toole filled second place with 58-2-0 of mostly carp taken from Lodge 59 with straight lead and an 8mm banded pellet.
