THE North Somerset Schools' Cross Country Championships proved to be a real family affair this year.

Four of the eight titles on offer at the Hutton Moor Sports Centre, Weston-super-Mare, went to two families with the Grinyers and Emerys taking centre stage.

The Grinyer twins, Kate and Adam, can take particular pride in their shared success. While Clevedon School's Katie, a former winner of the Easy Runner athlete of the month competition, was favourite to win the inter girls' race Adam's victory was a big surprise.

"I don't even like running!" admitted Adam. "I trained for two weeks a couple of years ago but it wasn't for me and I am happy to leave the running to Katie.

"I am shocked to win!"

Katie had to work harder for her success with Gordano's Cecilie Andersen, who worked really hard to stay in touch before finally falling away on the final lap.

"That was a hard race and I am very pleased to win as I am just coming back from a calf injury that forced me to rest in August and September," said Katie, who is older than her brother by a minute.

"I felt fine today and hopefully I can keep improving now."

In contrast, the Emery sisters Jasmine and Harriet are both keen runners and, like Grinyer, members of North Somerset AC. Representing Backwell School, 11-year-old Harriet raced to victory in the minor girls' age group, while 13-year-old Jasmine dominated the junior girls' race for her first district title.

Gordano's David Warnes is the reigning Avon Schools' champion and the 13-year-old looked impressive in retaining his junior boys' title from Ben Cureton. The meeting was smoothly organised by North Somerset Schools' sports partnership manager Shane German and his team, including several members of local club North Somerset AC.

Gordano finished top overall school in both the girls' and boys' events.
