Streets and pathways in Shirehampton are cleaner and residents safer thanks to two days of community action.

Safer Bristol, community safety officers Cheryl Coles and Jenny Benson came together with PCSOs Zaheer BulBul and Jasper Hughes to work with residents on local issues.

On Thursday a police community contact vehicle was parked outside the Co-op, in the High Street, to allow people to raise any concerns.

The day focused on enforcement with partner agency DVLA clamping six cars for out of date or no tax on vehicles. Council officers also enforced regulations on bins and waste at retail premises.

Trading standards officers issued under age sales advice packs to three retail premises, one had to remove some out-of-date food from its shelves and one did not have prices on all their items. Council parking services were out all day and issued fines for illegal or unsafe parking.

The following day the teams turned to litter picking with a community clean up on the Ridge and Penpole Lane.

Cheryl Coles, community safety officer for Safer Bristol said: "Grime encourages crime and we need to be aware that the appearance of the local environment is important to the quality of life of local people."

Councillor Gary Hopkins said: "When we have had these clean ups in other local areas residents often tell us how satisfying they find it to really improve the area where they live."
