Greg saves the day for Bromley
Bromley Heath United and Henbury Colts fought out an exciting 3-3 draw in a cracking Under-12 Division II encounter.
Henbury, who started the game in fourth place, had beaten some good sides in the first half of the season but it was Bromley who opened the scoring following a powerful run down the right from Sam Skuse. He beat two defenders before cutting the ball back for Jake Alderman to slot home.
Henbury replied with an unstoppable drive into the net after the ball had been cleared from a corner to make it 1-1 at half-time.
Danny Hickey and Greg Ward were introduced to the action as Bromley started to dominate, but when their skipper had to withdraw feeling unwell their rhythm was upset and Henbury stole in to net their second.
Heath responded well with Matt Weymouth, Joe O'Connor and Connor Cairaschi all going close. At the other end, Henbury missed a chance to extend their lead when they were awarded a penalty for handball against Marcus Lambert. Fortunately for Heath, the spot-kick was blazed over the bar.
James Malby came on and almost scored straight away for Heath but was denied by another fine save from the Henbury keeper.
Bromley finally got what they deserved when a fine through ball from Skuse found Malby, who netted at the second attempt.
With only minutes left, Henbury won the ball from a misdirected goal kick from the otherwise impressive Ross Baker and scored what appeared to be a winner. But Bromley had the last word as Greg Ward produced an unstoppable drive into the top left corner of the net to earn his side a point.
Southmead Community Sports took full advantage of a venue change to thrash Mangotsfield United B 12-0 in Under-13 Division V.
Field's ground at Pomphrey Hill was declared unfit due to a frozen pitch, so the match was switched to Southmead.
The hosts proved too strong for a battling Mangotsfield side, leading marksman Ryan Connolly heading the scoring with five of the goals and James Batt (2), Lee Burton, Reuben Martineau-Brown, Marlon Teakel, Oliver Bryant and Jack Darling, on his first start of the season, also on the scoresheet.
Despite the margin of victory, the Mangotsfield goalkeeper made several good saves.
The victory keeps Southmead top of Division V but, with several of their rivals having games in hand over them, the run-in looks set to be an exciting one.
