Two children have won a Bristol garden centre's competition to grow the city's biggest pumpkin.

Three-year-old Lois Cole, from Stockwood, and Brittany Kay, 10, from Saltford, stormed ahead with their spooky offerings that measured 139cm and 91cm respectively.

The girls were given a free packet of pumpkin seeds from Whitehall Garden Centre in Whitchurch last spring.

After months of cultivation and pest control the girls' finally saw the fruits of their efforts after being awarded a £30 voucher each to spend at the centre.

James Vitar, 25, plant supervisor at the garden centre, said: "We run this competition every year to encourage children to get into gardening. Some of the pumpkins were bigger than the kids themselves."

Garden centre David Manning said: "The contest was judged by the size of the pumpkin and not the weight. Lois and Brittany both entered very impressive pumpkins."
