A fund-raising jailbreak event – in which people had to travel as far as possible without spending any money – has raised more than £6,000 for charity.

Daredevils from across Somerset took part in the charity Jailbreak in aid of Weston Hospicecare, with some getting as far away as Paris and John-o'-Groats, hitching rides on trains, light aircraft and even in a hearse.

Fund raisers had just 24 hours to get as far away from the start point at Burnham Police Station as possible, by blagging and using their powers of persuasion only.

The Highlanders Team from the Fox and Goose in Brent Knoll came first as they blagged and begged their way the furthest, ending up at John-o'-Groats, travelling a distance of 801 miles and raising more than £2,500.

Fox and Goose landlady, Kerry Bastone, said: "It was quite a weekend and everybody really enjoyed it. We had some hairy moments trying to get through several feet of snow at one point but we kept going all the way and got as far north as possible without leaving land.

"It was a great cause to do it for as well, so we are really pleased to have raised as much money as we have and it is still coming in."

The team was accompanied by a film crew, which is making a film about their mini-adventure.

The Usual Suspects team got the furthest south as they reached Paris, France, travelling 574 miles.

And the Runaways team, which included the hospice's own Elaine Turner, probably took the most unusual transport getting to Blackpool – 326 miles – by hearse and light aircraft.

Elaine Turner said: "We certainly had some very inquisitive looks from fellow travellers on the M5 and M4, peering into a hearse that was transporting the Ridiculously Clad Woman, Mr Tango Man and a rubber duck. Our second form of transport was a Rally light aircraft, which we took from Swindon across to Oxford.

"The ground crew at Oxford Airport were very helpful and were happy to donate hard cash to the 'rattle buckets', as well as giving us proof of landing in the form of a rather silly Santa Hat from an airline."

Weston Hospicecare spokeswoman, Martina Nertney said: "It was a fantastic event and everybody had a really good time taking part.

"We've heard some great stories from those who have taken part and the invention and enthusiasm people have had for the event shows how important Weston Hospicecare is to this community.

"And of course the thousands that have been raised will be able to go towards vital treatment and care for people with life-limiting illnesses."
