Several Bristol restaurants and cafes have come up with great deals since the credit crunch began to kick in.

City centre restaurant Riverstation lowered the price of its Christmas menu following the recent VAT cut and continues to offer other reductions.

Last month the Government announced an emergency package to reduce VAT by 2.5 per cent, but Riverstation, in The Grove, cut the VAT on its festive menu by more than 2.5 per cent, dropping the price for a three course meal from £31.50 to £29.50.

That offer ended on December 23, but Riverstation still has several deals on, including children under 12 eating for free on a Sunday during January and February when two adults order from the main menu.

There is also a reduction in price of a set lunch from £14.75 to £12 for three courses, or £9.50 for two courses.

John Payne, co-owner of the restaurant, said: "We introduced the price cuts to help people out; times are hard financially for everyone. People are very sensitive to prices at restaurants at the moment."

Hermanos cafe bar in the Triangle is offering cut-price coffee for the next few months in a bid to keep people warm.

The cafe has slashed the price of its coffee to £1, or 50p for a takeaway beverage. It plans to keep the deal going until the next Budget is announced in 2009.

Owner Philippa Hart said: "We are trying to keep people on the Triangle warm over the winter and doing out bit to help out in the credit crunch. We're freezing the price of our coffee until March."

The Market Place Restaurant in St Nicholas Street in the city centre also has a deal on… the Credit Crunch Lunch.

For £7 diners get a choice of main dishes and a drink, including spirits, beers and wine.

It is available from Monday to Saturday between 3 and 5pm.

Co-owner Sam Daffin said: "The deal has been going for about four months, and it's really popular.

We get groups coming in to take advantage of it in the afternoon.

"We are a relatively new business and we wanted to offer some kind of deal.

"It seemed like a good idea to offer something to people short on money because of the credit crunch.

"It's still nice for people to get out once or twice a week for something to eat.

"Here they get a good meal and drink for not too much money."

“Yeah, it's blatant advertising but Riverstation is my favourite Bristol restaurant . I've been going there nine years now and I've never had a bad meal.
The set lunch menu for £12 for three courses is a bargain when you consider that they sell a steak and chips for £20 - it's decent stuff as well.
While we on the subject of free advertising, why don't the readers post some ideas for eating out cheap? I'll start with Porto Lounge just off Fishponds Road.”

“Quote from article . . . "dropping the price for a three course meal from £31.50 to £29.50" . . . CHOKE, COUGH :-( . . There's loads of places where you can get a good meal for a fiver, or a little more. Why give them the publicity?”
