Government is stuck in the past
IN saying that being anti cuts is akin to asking the Green Party to join Canute in commanding the tide to retreat, Glenise Morgan reveals just how mentally stuck in an ancient history the Con Dems are.
The cuts are an ideological assault on our welfare state, which includes the on-going transfer of common assets and funds to private hands. It has recently been revealed that shareholders in private health firm Circle Health – the first private firm to take over an NHS hospital – have given the Conservatives more than £1.4m. Many health businesses see the millions spent on healthcare in this country and want a piece of the cake. The simple question is: why can't all the money spent on healthcare go to health care rather than a proportion of it being raked off in profit ?
New ways of doing things does not mean constant privatisation. It means thinking about our whole economy differently, reducing our consumption of durable goods while creating jobs in Green industries. It means creating local municipal banks that will lend money to local businesses. We should stop tax evasion and avoidance and reign in casino banks who gamble with our money. It means using public money wisely to support the services which are most needed.
