Chef Mark Veale used to walk from Cleeve to school in neighbouring North Somerset village Claverham.

But today's Court-de-Wyck Primary School pupils have a different journey to school than Mark did in the 1980s.

The school has had a walking bus since April 2006 – the only one in North Somerset to run all week.

The bus started only on one day a week, but enough volunteers, many of whom from Cleeve's Holy Trinity Church, were keen to get involved for it to run every day.

"A walking bus from Cleeve was identified in the school travel plan and members of the church congregation, led by the vicar, the Rev Cathy Horder, were keen to get involved with reducing the carbon footprint of the village," said school governor David Mortimer.

Mark, 29, used to work with Gordon Ramsey and is head chef at Cadbury House Hotel and Country Club in Congresbury.

He joined the bus to celebrate International Walk to School Week.

"I grew up in Cleeve and made the walk to Court-de-Wyck every day," said Mark, who lives in Clevedon.

"Joining the children again brought back some very happy memories."

About 16 children use the walking bus each day.

"Walking to school has benefits on so many levels it has become almost the sensible option.

"It is so good to see such a good community project provide such a positive contribution to road safety and sustainable travel," said ," said Cllr Jeremy Blatchford, North Somerset Council executive member for children.

“Yet another misleading "Headlne" by the BEP reporter, as Gordon Ramsey is not involved at all. 1/10 for that report. Must try harder :-(”
