Gooseberries the star attraction at South Gloucestershire food festival
People in South Gloucestershire will be playing gooseberry at the launch of a food festival next month.
The historic Oldbury tart will be served to VIP guests at the Taste event in Thornbury.
Gooseberries are the main ingredient of the sweet tart, which looks like a savoury pie. It is believed to have been baked in the area for about 200 years.
Sue Keedwell, from Oldbury on Severn, who is baking the version for the food festival, has grown, harvested and frozen the fruit for the tart.
She will cook it to a recipe tracked down by the event's organiser Val Harding.
The festival launches with a food market in Thornbury High Street on September 12 and events continue throughout the district for a month.
Val Harding said: "The festival is now in its fifth year and promises to be the biggest and best yet. We have more than 25 producers showcasing their wares at around 35 events throughout the month so there is something for everyone to try.
"It is also great to have discovered that people are still keeping local traditions alive by continuing to bake sweet treats like the traditional Oldbury tart."
