John Barrowman: Hippodrome

SHOWBUSINESS seeps out of John Barrowman's every pore. As photographs of him growing up and later starting his musical theatre career flashed by on a big screen, one thing was made abundantly clear: this man was born to be on stage.

Barrowman was giving it the old razzle dazzle on the Hippodrome stage for three hours. His fans certainly got their money's worth, but his egotism did begin to grate somewhat in the second half.

That should not detract, however, from what was a mostly hugely enjoyable show. It was cabaret meets This Is Your Life, with Barrowman's two elderly parents even joining their son on stage for one number when he was not talking about his favourite subject, himself. Barrowman's life has taken some twists and turns, from being born in Glasgow, moving to Illinois, performing on Broadway and the West End, before hitting the big time with his portrayal of Captain Jack in Dr Who

.

Between talking about himself, he belted out the numbers, particular show-stoppers being his cover of Pink's Get the Party Started and Shania Twain's Man,

I Feel Like a Woman.

It was not all wild exuberance, however, with his versions of Memory and Let Your Love Flow showcasing his variety.

With much showbiz and razzle dazzle, this was good old-fashioned light entertainment from a consummate entertainer.

“A message to the contributor who was not too kind about local newspaper journalists. Everyone has to start somewhere. Martin Booth was actually praising John and ended with '' this was good old-fashioned light entertainment from a consummate entertainer''.
Please remember what John said on Sunday evening 'BE A GOOD PERSON'.”

“You seem to have missed the whole point of the concert. This was a musical autobiography done in concert format. John was not talking about himself to hear his own voice he was talking about his life. His fans love it when he gives insights like this. We (his fans) love to know the details and hang on his every word. He is probably the only star in the world that would bring his family on stage and know that his fans will love seeing them either in person or via photos. You as an outsider may of thought him egotistical for doing all this. His fans think of him as giving them what they want and a great time as well. Admittedly, any one who is in show business has to have an inner strength of ego to survive all the negative things that are thrown at them. No one is loved by everyone. So John does have a strong ego that gives him confidence in his abilities, and abilities that give him reason to have that strong ego. It is not a bad thing, but a necessary thing. It allows him to be who he is and to be honest about who he is. It allows him the courage and confidence to go out on that stage and give his all. We love him for it. And as you stated he puts on a "...hugely enjoyable show."”

“Please could the journalist explain to me who John Barrowman was supposed to talk about at a JOHN BARROWMAN concert. Hmmm Mr Smith from down the street maybe? A hint is in the name of the performer.

It is always sad little local newspaper jpurnalists that have to put him down just because you can't make it into big time journalism.”
