The Bristol & West AC Under-17 women's team struck gold at the Midland Counties Young Athletes Road Relay Championships on Sunday.

Expectations were already high for the traditional autumn opener at Sutton Park, Birmingham, and when Olivia Sadler rounded the final bend of leg one in third place the scent of victory was in the air.

Team manager Dave Taylor said: "With only a 53-second deficit to make up, Annabel Gummow chased down the opposition, running what was believed to be the fastest stage of the day (13:01), and handed over a clear minute's advantage to Naomi Speake."

Speake was never going to lose that lead and she worked hard to ensure her first championships title in four years at the club.

In the Under-15 boys' race, Luke Jacobs ran a terrific first leg to hand over a 51-second lead to Miles Chandler, and with Zac Tobias running the final leg, the team managed to secure the silver medals.

The Under-17 team of Jack Thompson, George Hurford and Adam Speake did well to hang on to seventh following the late withdrawal of Sam Bedwell and Rhys Park.

The team of Miranda Sadler, Lily Owsley and Megan Fowler acquitted themselves well to finish 15th in the Under-15 girls, while the Under-13 boys squad of Tom Grant, Stuart O'Connell and Kal Sevenzo also ran solidly.

Westbury Harriers' best result came in the Under-17 men's race with an excellent third place for the trio of Will Massey, who ran the club's fastest time, Felix McGrath and Freddy Barton.

With official results still to be confirmed the Under 17 women's trio of Emily Fitzhugh, Zoe Barber and Floren Scrafton appear to have finished fifth while the Under 13 girls' squad of Poppy Thompson, Holly Hill and Zoe Gould were 13th.
