Huge wins for the rinks skipped by Ron Wilks (35-5), Ernie Bees (33-13) and Gerry Coffield (31-13) helped Gloucestershire beat Wiltshire 148-89 at the North Wilts club in Chippenham.

Brian Mayell weighed in with a more modest 23-16 victory, leaving Jim Ford and John Duncan, who beat Don Thorne and Chris Stone respectively, to return the only winning cards for the home side.

Gloucestershire beat Worcestershire 44-43 in the first round of the National Under-25 Two Fours Championship. Mike Woodbridge's 32-13 home win at MidGlos made up for a loss for Anthony Sprules at Malvern.

The start of the Warner Leisure Hotels Wessex League season saw Bristol pipped by North Wilts 81-80, while Nailsea edged home against Whitchurch 81-79, and Christie Miller beat Clarrie Dunbar 78-73.

Malvern saw off MidGlos 75-72.
