Gloucestershire claimed second place to Glamorgan in the Channel League after a stunning 11.5-3.5 triumph over Gwent at The Monmouthshire.

County captain Nigel Thompson said: "After the shock defeat against Glamorgan and poor display against Cornwall, this was a great way to finish. They will be even more determined to go one step better next season."

Rising star Tyler Hogarty (Rodway Hill) won both games on his debut as Gloucestershire won the foursomes 3-2.

They then came into their own in the singles with a crushing 8.5-1.5 success. Chris Evans (Kendleshire) justified his recall with two points. Nick Day, Nick Scholey (Henbury), Richard Carter (Lansdown), Hogarty and Mark Pitcher (Stinchcombe) also won twice.

Shane Winstone (Knowle) and Andy Hale (Chipping Sodbury) added a point in the singles while Mat Stanford (Chipping Sodbury) halved with Welsh cap Joe Vickery.

Somerset rounded off the season with an impressive 8.5-6.5 win over champions Glamorgan at Saltford.

The pairs of Max Brittan (Saltford) and Ellis Cook (Burnham), Louis Boston (Saltford) and Charlie Cossins (Bath) and Laurie Canter (Saltford) and Dave Gregory (Burnham) were the foursomes winners as Somerset took a 3-2 morning lead.

In the singles, Canter, Brittan and Cook maintained 100 per cent records. Phil White (Wells) and Matt Kippen (Enmore Park) added further points, while Cossins halved as Somerset edged the afternoon session 5.5- 4.5.

Gloucestershire won the second team Wessex League after a 10.5-4.5 success over Gwent at Bristol & Clifton.

Their captain, Mike Darby (Chipping Sodbury), said: "The objective at the start of this season was to create a squad of players with strength in depth and an enthusiasm to represent their county. We have surpassed all my expectations with regard to player commitment and availability.

"We tried to build a squad that blends both youth and experience, with many players being welcomed back into the county set-up or being introduced for the first time. This decision has proved both sensible but also highly successful."

Sam Payne and Harry Fowler (Bristol and Clifton), Sam Morgan (Kendleshire), Shaun Thornhill (Broadway) and Adam Jenkinson (Knowle) all won twice. David Lake (Knowle) achieved a hole in one at the seventh.
