A SUSPECTED cannabis grower was arrested for allowing an illegal plant to grow to a record-breaking height in his garden.

The plant, which scaled a 6ft fence, is just part of a drugs haul seized by Avon and Somerset police from two neighbouring houses on the Bournville estate in Weston-super-Mare this morning.

Believed to be the largest ever found by the force, it was growing in a back garden on Brue Close next to a plant that had already been cropped. Inside the house, cannabis bud was drying next to radiators and on a clothes airer.

A 55-year-old was arrested on suspicion of cultivating a class B drug.

Next door, a partially-cultivated plant was found in the garden with the buds in jars inside the house.

Weapons including a baseball bat, two sets of scales and cash were also seized and a 49-year-old man was arrested.

Neighbourhood beat manager PC Andy Vallender was one of the team who searched the addresses.

He said: "While we obviously had information to prompt us going to the houses, we did not expect to find anything like the size of plants and quantity of cannabis.

"People need to understand that cultivating cannabis is against the law and we will act on any information we get about people growing it.

"When you consider the other things seized – the scales, the money, the weapons – you can see it is not a harmless pastime."

“"Weapons including a baseball bat" I thought baseball was a game.

I refuse to listen to the harm of any drug until we take away the harm of enforced moral control. Put down the gun of prohibition and then we can talk. Heath promotion is no place for moral control, else your helping hand becomes a hated controlling power.
