The days when school productions were restricted to the "classics" with a dash of Gilbert and Sullivan thrown in to allow the pupils to show off their musical talents are now fortunately well behind us.

The performing arts group at St Brendan's sixth form college have elected to tackle the popular American musical Calamity Jane for their showpiece production on March 24, 25 and 26. There will be performances at 7.30pm, with one at 2.30pm on March 24.

Tutors Rachael Woodhead, Emily Field and Rachael Banham are in charge of the production side of the show. Talented sixth form musicians are on hand and Rachael Banham has been able to assemble a proper orchestra to support the vocalists.

Two leading ladies will be on hand for both of the principal roles of Calamity Jane and Katie Brown. Jadine Griffee and Jodie Parker follow in the footsteps of the queen of light-hearted musical stars Doris Day in the role of Calamity Jane while Amy Bisp and Melanie Williamson share the Allyn McLerie role of Katie Brown. The lucky young man who shares the stage with these talented ladies is Kieron Rowley, who has landed the converted part of Wild Bill Hickock.

Just about as far apart in theatrical terms from the happy-go-lucky Calamity Jane is the Kelvin Players' next offering Brimstone And Treacle by Dennis Potter.

Described as being this controversial author's most infamous play, it discusses, among other strong issues, racial intolerance, religion and the concept of evil in a forthright way that some people might find offensive.

Alex Needham, who played the title role in "the Scottish play" for Kelvin, directs with June Metcalfe and Andy King as Mr and Mrs Bates seeking a miracle cure for their disabled daughter Pattie, played by Nicola Rope. They think they have found their miracle when Martin, Adam Church, comes into their lives but their hopes are crushed as they see the horrors their newfound friend is capable of.

The play is at the Kelvin Players Studio in Gloucester road from March 23 to 27 at 7.30pm. Bookings on 01179 593636 or online at www.kelvinplayers.co.uk.
