Pupils at a Bristol primary school have been designing their own games as part of a new approach to learn about maths and design and technology.

The youngsters at Stoke Bishop Primary were among hundreds of schoolchildren at 18 primary schools in the city who have been helping to improve the way they are taught.

Philippa Hepworth, head at Stoke Bishop, said: "We are all continuing to work hard to ensure our curriculum is exciting and relevant and will help prepare our pupils for their future lives. We want them to become successful learners, confident individuals and responsible citizens."

She led the group of schools in helping to produce a booklet which will be used nationwide to inspire high-quality teaching and learning.

The booklet has been published by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority, a national body which help schools and teachers to improve engagement with pupils.

Cabinet councillor Peter Hammond, who is in charge of the council's education department, said: "I'm delighted that schools across the country will be learning from the best that Bristol has to offer in this area.

The way subjects are taught needs to be both excellent and enjoyable. Teachers can take a thematic approach without losing sight of the basic skills every child needs to succeed.

Schools that feature in the booklet are Parson Street Primary, Hotwells Primary, Henleaze Junior School, Westbury Park Primary School and Hillcrest Primary School.
