GFA Challenge Trophy: Shirehampton see off Rockleaze to make progress
Somerset County League Premier Division side Shirehampton reached the second round of the GFA Challenge Trophy thanks to a late own goal against their Gloucestershire County League rivals.
Quite how the game remained scoreless until so late was a mystery as both teams squandered numerous gilt-edged chances.
Rockleaze looked the brighter side early on, confidently playing the ball about the park with the Simpson brothers, Troy, Kye and Cory, combining well in attack.
Shirehampton thought they had taken the lead when Ryan McCall headed home, only to see the linesman's flag raised because the ball was adjudged to have gone out of play from the incoming cross.
There was more controversy in the 20th minute when Troy Simpson played the ball through to brother Kye, who was brought down on the edge of the penalty box as he bore down on goal. The challenge from Charlie Harris was correctly rewarded with a yellow card from referee Ed Bishop.
After a spate of long shots were hit high and wide, Shirehampton's Lee Tudor was gifted a great opportunity to put the visitors in front after a long ball was missed by Danny Simons. Tudor was left one-on-one with Rockleaze keeper Manni Pullara but dragged his shot wide.
More chances came and went in the final 10 minutes of the half. Ryan McCall saw a fierce shot parried to safety by Pullara and veteran striker and Shirehampton target-man Martin Cook headed over.
Shirehampton began to take a grip on the game in the second half as manager Micky Tanner showed his attacking intentions by bringing on pacy striker Dan Griffiths for defender Andrew Gibson.
With the pace slowing as time ticked on, space started to open up and the chances to win the game started to arrive, with the best falling to Shirehampton's Richard Cakar. Confusion in the home defence saw the ball drop to Cakar six yards out, but he shot straight at Pullara, with McCall heading the follow-up chance into the ground and agonisingly wide.
Rockleaze's best chance came shortly afterwards when a move involving the Simpson brothers set up right winger Neil Simons in acres of space, but his finish smashed against the crossbar and back out with the keeper beaten.
With extra-time looming, the goal when it eventually arrived 10 minutes from time was comical to say the least, similar to one of those clips often seen on those football gaffes DVDs.
A low cross was drilled into the Rockleaze box where Danny Simons, in a desperate attempt to clear the danger, smacked the ball against his own teammate, the unfortunate Phil Sergeant, who could only watch as it rebounded off him and into his own net.
Shirehampton should have doubled their lead moments later when Griffiths brought the ball down neatly and raced into the home penalty area only for Pullara to pull off another great stop.
The final minutes of the match saw Rockleaze's Mark Linton let his frustration get the better of him as he lashed out with a badly-timed tackle and picked up a booking as his side searched in vain for an equaliser.
The visitors had to withstand a half-hearted penalty appeal, a parried shot and a header over the bar before Kye Simpson missed one final chance.
