This is Bristol

MAT Turner will be given another chance to shine for Bristol tomorrow – and Richard Hill is already backing the winger to emulate the feats of compatriots Mike Catt and Matt Stevens.

Like Catt and Stevens, flyer Turner quit South Africa for England early in his career – and has already caught the eye of the England Sevens selectors.

The Cape Town-born winger has represented South Africa at Under-20 level, but looks destined for a Test career with England further down the line.

And his head coach at Bristol is backing the 20-year-old, who scored two tries on his Bristol debut earlier this month, to become a genuine star of the game.

"Mat is a young lad and a superb talent – and people in South Africa have told us that the South Africans should never have let him go," said Hill, whose side host Saracens in the EDF Energy Cup tomorrow.

"That's how highly he's thought of over there and we are lucky we were in the right place and the right time to have got him.

"I think for the future of Bristol, he is going to be an absolute star, I really do."

And when asked if Turner could emulate the success of Catt and Stevens, both of whom have become stars for England after leaving South Africa, Hill said: "I think so.

"From what people in South Africa tell me and from what I've seen, he could be a real star.

"He's got absolutely searing pace and acceleration off the mark and he is going to be an exceptional rugby player.

"The England Sevens selectors are already looking at him very seriously and he could do well on that circuit because he is so quick and he can tackle."

Turner's arrival at Bristol little more than a month ago has injected new enthusiasm and competition to the club's back-line, and he is already pressing for a regular place in the starting line-up.

He scored two tries on his debut in an EDF Energy Cup match at Northampton just days after landing in the country – and could figure against the same opponents in the Guinness Premiership on November 16.

"We know about David Lemi's capabilities – he can conjure something out of nothing and win a game for us," said Hill.

"He's a natural try-scorer – and another natural try-scorer is Mat Turner.

"I think Mat is very much in the mould of David Lemi and we will almost certainly give him some time on the wing against Saracens this weekend.

"If he can step up again then he will give us an interesting selection headache for the Northampton game.

"But he is genuinely in contention now – there is no doubt at all that he is a very good rugby player in attack and defence. I think he has got a very good future here."
