Apples will be at the centre of activities at an orchard harvest day in Winterbourne's medieval barn.

Different varieties of the fruit will be on display, with producers giving advice on how to grow the best crops.

Visitors can also try bobbing for apples and producing the longest piece of peel.

Cider and apple juice will be available for tasting and people can even take apples from their own garden along to be pressed into juice.

The listed barn in Church Lane was originally built in 1342 to store and thresh grain crops but was later used for cider production.

Its old stone-flagged floor, which has survived over the centuries, even features a circular pathway used by the horses whose power drove the cider mill.

The structure is owned by South Gloucestershire Council, which bought it under compulsory purchase powers to prevent it falling down, and is cared for by a trust.

The harvest day is part of the South Gloucestershire Food and Drink Festival and will run on Sunday, October 11, from 10.30am to 3.30pm.

Winterbourne Down Border Morris dancers will add to the rural festivities, with performances at noon and 2pm.
