PEOPLE popping out to the shops in Bedminster on Saturday found themselves being entertained by free theatre.

While choosing their carrots and apples or deciding which loaf of bread to buy, punters found themselves centre stage as actors performed around them.

Local theatre company Show of Strength put on 36 performances in shops across East Street and North Street.

The shows, which were performed in 12 shops including a bakery, fruit and veg market, a barbers and an estate agent, were part of a novel initiative to help revive the two most popular shopping streets in the area.

The theatrical project – called Trading Local – was produced by Show of Strength's Sheila Hannon. The project has been funded using money Bedminster was awarded through the Portas Pilot initiative, a Government scheme to promote high street shopping, led by TV businesswoman Mary Portas.

Bedminster was chosen as a finalist from more than 370 bids along with 26 other towns to create initiatives to improve the high street.
