The Friends of Arnos Vale
IT is 25 years since a meeting was organised at Holy Trinity Church in opposition to plans to dig up the dead and turn Arnos Vale Cemetery into a housing estate.
When Arthur Usher, now 92, stood up and said "we should do something about this... who's with me?" and the hands of the 200 present rose one by one in support, it was a great moment of community activism.
The Friends of Arnos Vale, as they became, proved by campaigning and, most importantly, uniting as a community, we can make a difference. A quarter of a century on, the evidence is there for all to see.
