RALLY Raid World champion Guerlain Chicherit literally turned the motoring world upside down on Sunday when he became the first person in the world to successfully backflip a car.

After four years preparation, Chicherit fired his MINI Countryman into orbit, flipped a perfect 360 and stomped all four wheels on to an eight-metre-high snow ramp in a private attempt during the morning. Not content with jumping just once, he then repeated the stunt in front of thousands of fans that evening in the French ski resort of Tignes.

Emerging from his machine after the landing, Chicherit said: "Before the jump it was crazy. I was alone in the car before the start and I just had to do it, everything was ready.

"I had to arrive at 60 kph and be full throttle in the kicker to get the right rotation.

"In the jump, I knew the balance of the car was good and it took me maybe 20 seconds to realise I had landed on my wheels!"

From the initial concept, through to creating the outrageous bespoke Reiger suspension and testing the car with numerous jumps on to a mammoth airbag, Chicherit can confidently take the crown as the most extreme rally driver out there.

"When you attempt something nobody has ever achieved before, the stress is really high, but the only way is to just try it," the Frenchman said confidently. "It wasn't the craziest thing I've ever done, but for sure it's in the top three. It was sick – I just want to do it again!"
