French pop star Mark Cean gave a North Somerset school a musical master class – and a language lesson at the same time.

Cean, who has made two albums and is due to release a third, spent a day with pupils at St Katherine's School, Pill.

He worked with pupils studying GCSE and A level French, and also sang with children from Crockerne Primary School.

Cean held singing classes, teaching pupils the songs and getting them to sing in French.

French teacher Rachel Manning said: "Following on from successful master classes with our sixth form students last year, we extended the event to give students of all ages the experience and enrichment of French beyond the classroom.

"A lot of students think French is an old-fashioned type of language and the idea of the master classes was to get our children interested in the language using modern-day songs."

Mrs Manning said the day was such a success that the North Somerset school hoped to repeat it next year. She also wants to hold a concert for pupils to singing the French songs to parents.
