Gloucestershire all-rounder James Franklin has spoken of his delight at signing for another year as the county's overseas player.

The Kiwi had taken five wickets against Kent and was 104 not out on Thursday evening when he got a call from the New Zealand management informing him he had been called up for the Champions Trophy in South Africa.

An injury to Jacob Oram necessitated Franklin's recall so he had to retire not out and was replaced in the team by 12th man Anthony Ireland.

The move led to a rare – but not unique – example of 12 players batting in a first-class innings. The previous occasion was when Somerset played Worcestershire in 2005 and Gareth Batty was called up by England when 16 not out overnight.

Before flying south, the New Zealander was also awarded his county cap, the club's player of the month award and a framed scorecard for taking a hat-trick and scoring a century against Derbyshire at Cheltenham last month. Only Mike Procter had previously achieved such a feat for Gloucestershire.

The third ball of his hat-trick against Derbyshire won the county's champagne moment of the year award.

"I am looking forward to coming back next year and it is nice to get the contract finalised," said Franklin.

"I have enjoyed this year and the changing room and I think we have played some good cricket in the Championship.

"There is some work to do in the Twenty20 but I am looking forward to the challenges of next year.

"The highlight has probably been the Friends Provident Trophy run and it was disappointing to be bundled out in the semi in the way we were.

"We had a bit of a glitch through Cheltenham and lost games to Leicester and Middlesex which we should have done better in.

"But we have been on an up this season from last season and hopefully things will keep improving.

"We have got a very good bowling unit but the bane of our problems has been a bit of a lack of runs. When we have been able to score big runs we have been able to win games. If we can post 350-400 we will win more games than we lose or draw."
