Dean Francis' hopes of a spectacular return to the ring after a seven-month lay off failed to materialise in Swindon on Friday night.

His eight-round comeback clash with London-based Ugandan Joey Vegas ended in a draw.

Francis, 36, who had only been in the gym for three weeks ahead of the fight, delivered a workmanlike performance.

But Vegas landed some menacing right-hands that firmly tested the adopted Bristolian's jaw.

Scaling 14st 4lb, the reigning British light-heavyweight champion would have to shed almost two stones to defend his title.

And he gave a very strong hint that his mind is now focused on the cruiserweight division.

Francis said: "Getting down to light heavy takes away my power and I feel happier moving up a division.

"Enzo Maccarinelli still remains in my sights, but a few fights are needed before we get together in the ring."

Bristol's Dan Stewart claimed a deserved points win over London southpaw Johnny Greaves from their four-round light- welterweight clash.

Swindon heavyweight Ben Harding delighted his home-town supporters with a convincing points win over Howard Daley.

Bristol light welterweight Adam Cummings has still to claim his first professional win after drawing with Birmingham veteran Karl Taylor.

Taylor was left with a deep, gaping wound over his left eye early in the second session, but Cummings could not take full advantage.

Lydney lightweight Chris Higgs secured his second win in the paid ranks with a comprehensive points decision over Sid Razak.

Swindon super middleweight Marlon Reid claimed his first stoppage after halting Sherman Alleyne in the third of a scheduled four-round clash.

Swindon's Jamie Cox remains on target for a British welterweight title challenge after demolishing Jason Rushton in less than three minutes.
