Forsyth tips Hanham for glory
Long Ashton have an outside chance of claiming the second promotion spot in Bristol & District League Division One.
But club secretary Andy Forsyth's believes tomorrow's opponents Hanham will be the side joining likely title winners Phoenix West Indians in the Senior Division next year.
Fifth-placed Ashton must overhaul Bristol YMCA , Bristol Pakistanis and Hanham with two matches left this summer.
"My selection would be Hanham to win promotion," said Forsyth.
"They lost to bottom of the league Frampton Cotterell last weekend, but they are still my choice. They seem to be the more consistent team and they have a history of playing at a higher level. We will be lucky to claim promotion. But if we could win on Saturday, then it would open everything up.
"We were looking to consolidate this season after a few yo-yo seasons. If we didn't go up we would be happy with another year in Division One.
"It is very tight but it could come down to which players are available."
Ashton may struggle in their remaining matches. One of their leading players, Paul Sainsbury, will not play again this summer because of football commitments.
And several players are set to attend the club's former captain Jonty Quinn's wedding a week tomorrow.
Ashton have not won since beating Bradley Stoke by 55 runs, when Sainsbury hit an unbeaten 135 and claimed the Evening Post bat for the performance of the week.
The club's best run of form came at the beginning of the season when they bounced back from an opening day defeat to claim four wins on the trot.
Forsyth is happy with Ashton's displays this year even if they have faltered lately.
He added: "We have claimed seven wins.
"We have tailed off lately but it is nice to have something to play for.
"We might have been top for one week but we have also been in the second spot for a number of weeks.
"We have managed to get through some games with under-strength teams. That was pleasing."
