One of their first acts upon taking charge was to sack Steve Cotterill as manager and replace him with Sean O'Driscoll.
All appeared to be going well when the Reds beat Leeds 4-2 at Christmas to move up to seventh in the Championship table, only for O'Driscoll to be relieved of his duties within hours. All of which paved the way for Billy Davies, the man who left the club under a cloud in 2011, to return to the City Ground for a second spell in charge.
But the 48-year-old Scot, who has agreed a three and a half year contract, will take a watching brief at Ashton Gate this weekend before taking up his duties on Monday.
Appointed caretaker manager on Wednesday, assistant boss Rob Kelly will select the side to face the Robins.
Forest chairman Fawaz Al Hasawi said: "I've spoken to Rob and he is happy to take charge of the team for the foreseeable future, starting with Saturday's game at Bristol City.
He is an experienced man and I know the team is in safe hands."
Given that Forest have won only once in seven games since O'Driscoll departed and lost to Watford and Birmingham in their last two outings, he faces a tough task.
