They then travelled to Puxton Park outside Weston-super-Mare by coach to enjoy an afternoon of fun to take their minds off absent family members who will be serving abroad this Christmas.

Debbie Howarth, PR & Events Manager for Go Commando, Supporting Royal Marine Families, said: "This weekend some of the 40 Commando RM families were in Taunton, meeting at camp from all over the country to have an update and brief from the Unit Commanding Officer about how operations are going in Afghanistan, as it is their loved ones who are away on this deployment.

"With such a lot of worry and anxiety on their minds, we felt a trip to the park would be a treat for the children and mums alike."

The adventure park in Hewish endeavours to help worthy causes by staging a series of fundraising events and appeals throughout the year, particularly at Christmas.

Alistair Mead, Puxton's managing director, said: "I cannot imagine how hard it must be for children to be separated from their dad's and mum's who are serving in the UK forces.

"It must be tough all year around but particularly at Christmas when the majority of families are reunited for festive celebrations.

"We decided to offer these families some festive cheer and invited them to enjoy a family day out at our adventure park this weekend and we hope it made a difference to them."
