Bristol City defender Liam Fontaine came through his comeback game with flying colours last night.

Sidelined since damaging ankle ligaments in a Coca-Cola Championship fixture against Derby County at Pride Park on September 26, the Londoner announced his return to action in a Totesport.com Combination match against Reading.

And he came through unscathed as City recovered a two-goal deficit to draw 2-2. City assistant manager Keith Millen said: "Liam played the full 90 minutes and showed us what we wanted to see.

"There were no problems with his injury, which was good, and we were also pleased with his fitness."

An unused substitute at Nottingham Forest last Saturday, Fontaine is now setting his sights on earning a recall when City return to Championship action against West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns on Saturday week.

Millen added: "Liam is in good shape and he will definitely be in contention for the West Brom game.

"We will probably give him another run-out when we play Southampton in a reserve-team match at their Marchwood training ground next Monday, just to improve his sharpness."

David Clarkson also pressed his case for a first start since August 23. Recently recovered from illness, the Scotland international striker netted City's first goal eight minutes into the second half and played the full 90 minutes.

Millen said: "We played Clarky in a central striking role and he looked sharp and scored a very well-taken goal. He is another one who is pushing."

Jake Taylor shot Reading into a 2-0 half-time lead, but Clarkson launched a second-half fightback when scoring from a header, and fellow striker Marlon Jackson surged into the penalty area to fire the equaliser from 12 yards with a minute left on the clock.

"We were poor in the first half, but the second half was much better for us," added Millen.

Bristol City goalkeeper Adriano Basso, defender Christian Ribeiro, midfielder Gavin Williams and striker John Akinde all played the full game.

“Johno you need a good striker so play Clarkson in his natural position what you bought him for not all over the place like Forest.Give the guy a chance he hasn't had one since moving.”

“Great to hear David Clarkson was played in his natural position of centre-forward, where he scored 27 goals in 80 appearances over the last two seasons. I believe the time is now right to give DC an extended run as centre-forward for the first team.”

“Clarkson deserves a shot in the centre-forward position that earned him 26 goals last season.”
