Somerset's present tormentor Graham Onions made the first Test squad named in England coach Andy Flower's reign but former captain Michael Vaughan was among those snubbed yesterday as scant regard was paid to reputation.

A bold set of picks for the first npower Test against West Indies at Lord's highlighted that performances alone will dictate team make-up under Flower.

Ian Bell and Owais Shah were overlooked and Steve Harmison was bypassed in the bowling stakes.

Essex batsman Ravi Bopara has been selected to fill the number three position after hitting a hundred against the West Indians in Barbados last month. The 12-man party also includes uncapped pace bowling pair Tim Bresnan and Onions as back-up to James Anderson and Stuart Broad.

National selector Geoff Miller said: "We are looking for 11 players to take on the Aussies and this is a chance for Ravi to show what he can do."

Onions, 26, gave Somerset's bowlers a lesson in line and length yesterday as he took 5-30 in a 12 over spell at Taunton on day two of the LV County Championship match between Justin Langer's men and current champions Durham. The paceman finished with 6-31 as Somerset were bowled out for just 69 and forced to follow on as Durham had posted 543 in their opening innings.

England's 12-man squad to face West Indies in the first npower Test at Lord's, starting on May 6: Andrew Strauss (capt), James Anderson, Ravi Bopara, Tim Bresnan, Stuart Broad, Paul Collingwood, Alastair Cook, Graham Onions, Monty Panesar, Kevin Pietersen, Matt Prior, Graeme Swann.
