Float your model boat in Clevedon
A convoy of up to 100 model boats will take over the seafront at the annual Marine Lake Festival in Clevedon next month.
The event on September 12 and 13, which is organised by the Marine Lake Enthusiasts Society (Marlens) will see the fantastic range of radio-controlled boats take to Marine Lake for visitors to admire.
The display will be supplied by Clevedon Model Boat Club and other clubs in the South West and Wales. A selection of boats will also be available for the public to try their hand at controlling themselves.
Participants can drive and manoeuvre the mini-motorboats around an obstacle course on the lake. Clevedon and District Model Boat Club founder Mike Mayhew has organised this treat for the festival.
Mr Mayhew, who used to be a professional boat builder and marine engineer, now owns a model boat business, Waverley Models, in Clevedon. He also played a key role in bringing the Marine Lake back to life by temporarily repairing the outer wall and now volunteers as a lake warden.
Mr Mayhew said: "We've got an especially good line-up of boats this year. There will also be a demonstration of high speed racing boats.
"These racing boats, which are also radio- controlled, will charge around the lake reaching speeds of 40mph simulating what real powerboats can do."
Marlens chairman and festival organiser, Joe Norman, said: "The model boat display is going to be one of the highlights of the weekend, with people travelling from all over the South West to see the models."
